SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals | International students 3%; international staff 2%; graduates from 116 countries |
KNUCA and SDG 17: Partnerships that Transform Knowledge into Collective Action
Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUCA) consistently develops a dynamic ecosystem of global and institutional partnerships spanning education, science, government policy and industry. For KNUCA, SDG 17 is not a formal declaration but a transparent system of joint decision-making and knowledge exchange in which every memorandum, collaborative project and open-access publication produces measurable social impact: strengthening Ukraine’s resilience, reconstruction and inclusive growth. The university’s internationalisation framework aligns with the SDG 17 policies and is documented in the International Cooperation section and the News portal, which provide continuous public evidence of agreements, mobility programmes, consortia and research outcomes.
Throughout 2024, KNUCA recorded a series of landmark examples of partnership maturity and cross-sector collaboration. Early in the year, university researchers participated in major global academic events such as the International Scientific Conference “Scientific Research: Theoretical Foundations and Practical Applications” (Vienna, 24–26 January 2024) and the 3rd International Scientific and Practical Conference “Modern Technological Trends in Smart Industry and the Internet of Things” (25–26 January 2024, with participants from Ukraine, the UK, Poland, Iraq, Bulgaria and others). These events fostered sustained networks of co-authorship, peer review and joint proposals for European funding. Details and participant lists are available in the official reports: Vienna Conference, 24–26.01.2024 and Smart-Industry & IoT Conference, 25–26.01.2024.
A strong focus is placed on internationalisation through Erasmus+. The dedicated page publishes all mobility calls, orders and agreements, including the renewed project announcement from 2 January 2024. These materials transparently track student and staff exchanges. In March 2024, KNUCA signed an updated Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreement (Higher Education Student and Staff Mobility), formalising procedures and quality indicators for international mobility.
Concrete cases illustrate how these partnerships turn into real learning and research opportunities. Architecture students joined the Erasmus+ KA171 mobility to the University IUAV of Venice, participating in studio courses and international design workshops. Faculty members engaged in the UKRENERGY consortium — a project connecting energy efficiency and building reconstruction — which included a training visit to University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli (Caserta, Italy) in March 2024 and a coordination meeting in Kraków in May 2024. These partnerships embody the EU’s model of transnational cooperation in sustainable infrastructure.
KNUCA further expanded its visibility through international networking and donor-engagement events. In April 2024, Ukrainian representatives attended a researcher networking session in Berlin organised by DAAD, Leopoldina, and major German foundations (Volkswagen, Gerda Henkel), serving as a platform for partnership development and collaborative project design.
Strategic cooperation with government agencies represents another dimension of SDG 17 at KNUCA. On 5 February 2024, the University signed a memorandum with the Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property and Innovation, strengthening frameworks for intellectual-property protection, technology transfer and innovation policy. Similar public agreements are regularly documented on the university’s website, ensuring transparency and verification of institutional partnerships.
The university’s partnership network is supported by a robust institutional infrastructure. The International Cooperation section lists bilateral agreements, mobility frameworks, grants and professional partnerships; the Science and Innovation section covers joint conferences and research projects; faculty pages include dedicated international-cooperation subpages. For example, the Department of Environmental Protection Technologies outlines cooperation geography with the UK, Germany, Poland, China, Slovakia, Sweden and France. Altogether, KNUCA maintains over 60 active agreements with universities in 26 countries, consolidating its position in Europe’s academic landscape.
KNUCA’s conferences and forums serve as catalysts for academia–industry partnerships. The BIT & BIS 2024 IT Forum (Kyiv, February 2024) focused on cloud services, data, IoT and cybersecurity — all critical for digital transformation of construction and cities. In autumn 2024, the University hosted the International Forum “Architecture, Construction, Design: Technology, Energy, Management”, gathering hundreds of participants and leading to new memoranda and innovation projects. These events strengthen ties with production clusters and municipal authorities, connecting engineering education with practical sustainability.
Partnership at KNUCA is also expressed through open science and cooperative pedagogy. Conference proceedings, open-access publications and indexed collections capture tangible results of collaborations. The institutional repository provides permanent access to joint academic and applied research — from materials science to human-resources sustainability. In 2024, the Bud Master Class 2024 proceedings series reaffirmed KNUCA’s role as a platform that not only hosts professional discussions but also guarantees continuity of knowledge through ISBN-registered publications.
Transparency and open data remain integral components of SDG 17 implementation. The Public Reports portal (https://www.knuba.edu.ua/pro-akademiyu/zviti/) aggregates verified information on international activities, education-quality indicators, research performance, financial transparency and anti-corruption measures. This enables external partners, donors and applicants to assess the University’s progress toward the SDGs. The site also features dedicated Erasmus+ news (training programmes, Jean Monnet initiatives, and the ClimEd platform), providing a clear overview of each cooperation track.
KNUCA systematically embeds global perspectives in its study programmes. Faculties such as the Faculty of Management and Information Security and the Faculty of Geoinformation Systems integrate internationalisation into curricula through double-degree options, English-taught courses and national/international credit mobility. Study plans explicitly include modules on international cooperation, project management and sustainability, ensuring that students acquire both professional and global competences.
Finally, KNUCA’s SDG partnership network bridges academia, government and communities. In 2024, the University strengthened cooperation with municipalities, ministries and professional associations in areas such as reconstruction, energy efficiency, urban planning and digital infrastructure. Joint initiatives involving students and faculty in public-administration and recovery projects — regularly documented on the website — combine education, internships and guest lectures by practitioners and officials.
In summary, KNUCA’s partnership strategy fully aligns with SDG 17 principles: expanding cooperation geography (agreements, consortia, mobility), improving quality and openness of joint outputs (co-authorship, conferences, open publications), ensuring transparency (public reports, integrity measures, news coverage), embedding global competencies in education (Erasmus+, Jean Monnet modules, professional mobility), and maintaining focus on impact — from national reconstruction to Europe’s climate and energy goals. This integrated approach transforms partnerships into a long-term instrument of social change, positioning KNUCA as a national hub where academia, government, business and international donors converge around a common purpose — sustainable development and strong institutions.

These activities include joint conferences, expert exchanges, and collaborative events with UNESCO, EU academic networks and national partners.
KNUCA integrates the outcomes of international cooperation into its teaching and research environment, fostering a culture of global citizenship and shared responsibility. By linking Ukrainian scientific expertise with international knowledge systems, the University contributes to peace, innovation and sustainable development worldwide.
Policy on Data Sharing, Monitoring and Open Reporting for SDGs
(Indicator 17.4 – Data, Transparency and Reporting for Sustainable Development)
Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUCA) ensures transparency, accountability and open data access as essential elements of its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals. This policy establishes procedures for data collection, publication and monitoring to support SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals and the broader national system of sustainable-development reporting.
The University systematically publishes statistical and analytical data on its official website. The Public Reports page (https://www.knuba.edu.ua/pro-akademiyu/zviti/) provides annual performance summaries, indicators on education quality, research achievements and international cooperation. These reports are aligned with national standards for transparency in higher education and with the global framework for SDG monitoring.
Information on the prevention of corruption, integrity control and compliance mechanisms is available in the Anti-Corruption Measures section (https://www.knuba.edu.ua/antikorupcijni-zaxodi/). This ensures that public data reflect the University’s commitment to ethical governance and integrity across all institutional activities.
KNUCA supports open access to research outputs and statistical information through its Institutional Repository (https://repositary.knuba.edu.ua) and open databases of scientific publications. Each faculty and department contributes quantitative data to the central information system, which tracks progress across education, research and community engagement indicators.
Monitoring and reporting of SDG-related actions are coordinated through the Quality Assurance and Analytics Unit (https://www.knuba.edu.ua/yakist-osvity/), which compiles performance metrics for international and national benchmarking. Data on partnerships, research output, student engagement and environmental initiatives are integrated into annual reports and communicated to the public via online platforms.
By maintaining transparent, verifiable and publicly accessible data, Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture demonstrates accountability to society and strengthens confidence in higher education as a driver of sustainable transformation.
Policy on Education for Global Citizenship and Partnership Competences
(Indicator 17.5 – Global Citizenship and Partnership Education)
Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUCA) fosters the development of global citizenship competences, intercultural dialogue and responsibility for sustainable development through all levels of study. This policy defines the educational approach that integrates global perspectives, partnership values and civic ethics into curricula and extracurricular activities.
The Faculty of Management and Information Security (https://www.knuba.edu.ua/fakultety/fakultet-upravlinnya-ta-informaczijnoyi-bezpeky/) and the Institute of Innovative Education coordinate academic programmes that incorporate international cooperation, human-rights awareness, and sustainable-development principles. Courses such as “Public Policy and Governance Ethics” and “International Cooperation and Globalisation” prepare students to participate in international partnerships and decision-making processes.
Students and staff engage in international projects and mobility programmes under Erasmus+ and DAAD, as reported on the International Cooperation page (https://www.knuba.edu.ua/mizhnarodna-diyalnist/). Participation in these initiatives strengthens global competencies, language proficiency and intercultural understanding, essential for building peaceful and inclusive societies.
KNUCA also promotes civic and partnership education through volunteering, environmental campaigns and cultural diplomacy projects documented in the Student Life section (https://www.knuba.edu.ua/studenty/). These initiatives empower students to act as ambassadors of sustainable development and agents of positive social change.
The integration of SDG topics into teaching and university life ensures that graduates of KNUCA are equipped not only with professional knowledge but also with the ethical and intercultural capacities needed to address global challenges collectively.
